Things to do : Cotswolds Sight-seeing
The Cotswolds abound with Visitor Attractions and Sight-Seeing
opportunities.
Winstone Glebe is the perfect Bed & Breakfast for anyone wishing
to explore the glorious Cotswolds; its pretty villages such
as Bibury, Lower and Upper Slaughter and Stanton;
its market towns of Cirencester, Tetbury, Painswick, Stow-on-the-Wold,
Fairford, Chipping-Campden and Moreton-in-Marsh. All
have wonderful churches and are rich in antique shops, rural crafts
and local history. There are medieval castles at Berkeley
and Warwick, which are particularly suited for the young.
The area is renowned for the high number of antique shops especially
in Stow-on-the-Wold, Tetbury and Lechlade.
Cirencester has an Antique Market every Friday.
Simon Jenkins in his book Englands 1000 Best Churches
lists 37 for Gloucestershire. 0f these four have five stars, more
than for any other county. Very close by are the churches of Elkstone
(3 Star) and Duntisbourne Rouse (2 star).
There are many gardens to visit, including Hidcote, Kiftsgate,
Misarden, Owlpen, Malmelsbury and Rodmarton and world
famous arboreta at Westonbirt and Batsford - see our Gardens Webpage
Stratford, Bath and Oxford are within 1 hour's drive.
Cheltenham, the home of National Hunt Racing is 20
minutes away; Chepstow, Newbury, Warwick and Stratford within
the hour.
Polo is played at Cirencester throughout the summer.
And for the more energetic
Being an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' there are numerous
well-signposted walks. The more energetic can explore further
afield by bicycle or play tennis on our court. There
are also several golf courses to chose from in the area.
A Great Day Out
The Cotswolds is famous for its numerious Great Houses and Gardens
which make for a great day out. All of the following visitor attractions
are within easy driving distance and for those who do not wish to
drive, you can hire a car and driver locally who will take you on
a guided tour of the Cotswolds.
Chedworth Roman Villa, Yanworth, Cheltenham
One of the finest Romano-British villa in Britain. Set amongst woodland
with fine views, the site includes a water shrine, two bath houses
and 4th century mosaics.
Corinium Museum, Park Street, Cirencester
Award-winning museum, featuring one of the finest collections of
antiquities from Roman Britain. Full-scale reconstructions of a
dining room, a kitchen and garden show how life was in Roman Cirencester.
Also displays on the Cotswolds from Prehistory to Medieval times.
Crickley Hill Country Park,
144 acres of limestone grassland, beech woodland and parkland on
the Cotswold scarp. Extensive views, site of archaeological interest,
Visitor Centre and waymarked trails.
Prinknash Abbey & Pottery, Cranham, Nr Painswick
A modern Abbey in idyllic surroundings specialising in classic contemporary
ceramics - Pottery Tours, Gift Shop, Tea Rooms, Disabled Access
Cotswold Water Park & Keynes Country Park, Shorncote,
Cirencester
All outdoor needs satisfied - nature reserves, country parks, water
sports, Thames Path, cycling, fishing, riding. Safe summer bathing.
Jet Age Museum, Benthan Works, Witcombe
See historic aircraft and other displays in the hanger including
the famous Meteror and the 1950's Javelin Interceptor which are
both being restored in the museum-cum-workshop. Sit in Vulcan, Canberra,
Buccaneer and Harrier Jump Jet cockpits. World War II relics and
other historic exhibits.
